Teaching School

With Burnt Mill Academy graded as Outstanding by Ofsted, BMAT is a designated teaching school. The Teaching School works with the West Essex Teaching School Alliance.

The school has three elements it works on – Initial Teacher Training, Continued Professional Leadership and Development and School to School support – as required by the Department for Education.

Donna Walsh, Director of BMAT Teaching School, says: “Teaching school status gives Outstanding schools a leading role in the training and professional development of teachers, support staff and head teachers, as well as contributing to the raising of standards through school to school support. Of the 800 teaching schools in the UK, the BMAT Teaching School is the only one in Harlow. We are excited about the future of teacher training at BMAT. Your career in teaching starts here!”

ITT – Initial Teacher Training

The Teaching School delivers high quality, school-based ITT, for both primary and secondary schools within BMAT. The school works with Teach First, Now Teach, Premier Pathways, Schools Direct , Apprenticeships, Straight to Teach and Assessment Only to offer flexibility in its routes into teaching. The Teaching School hosts a series of open events, taster sessions and coffee mornings and afternoons to recruit candidates into teaching – contact the team directly for dates of upcoming events.

CPLD – Continued Professional Leadership and Development

Opportunities are offered to new and experienced staff who are encouraged to build up portfolios to gain accreditation as Specialist Leaders in Education (SLE) or lead practitioner status. The Teaching School also looks to qualify Local Leaders in Education and National Leaders in Education who are trained to be deployed to schools in need of support. Many Trust teachers have also completed NPQML and NPQSL (national professional qualification in middle leadership / senior leadership). Others have completed their educational masters via Cambridge and Warwick universities while working full-time.

STS – School to School support

As a Teaching School, BMAT is designated the responsibility for supporting schools in need. The Trust has devised a working practise through a team of curriculum directors who can be deployed to specific areas and phase groups where they are needed. Curriculum Directors advise on subject knowledge, curriculum, moderation, standardisation and assessment.
